Background & Origins

  • Institutional Roots

    • The Environmental Engineering program at ITB traces its origins to Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (THB), founded on July 3, 1920. By March 19, 1935, a specialized hygienic‐engineering laboratory, Laboratorium voor Technische Hygiene en Assaineering, was established under Dutch colonial administration. That laboratory became ITB’s Environmental Engineering Lab on January 17, 1966.

    • The formal Division of Sanitary Engineering was initiated on October 10, 1962 within the Faculty of Civil Engineering. As the field broadened in scope, this division was renamed Environmental Engineering on January 5, 1984

Launch & Early Publications

  • Journal Turnaround: 2006–2007

    • In August 2006, ITB produced a special issue through collaboration with IATPI under the title Jurnal Teknik Lingkungan Edisi Khusus.

    • Regular publications restarted in 2007:

      • Volume 12, No. 2 appeared in October 2006

      • Volume 13, No. 1 (April 2007) and No. 2 (October 2007) were released under ISSN 0854–1957.

    • These issues were collaboratively published by the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering ITB and the Indonesian Association of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering (IATPI).

Mission, Scope & Access

  • Official Journal Status

    • Jurnal Teknik Lingkungan (JTL) is the official peer-reviewed journal of the Environmental Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, ITB.

  • Scope

    • It covers multidisciplinary subjects such as water and wastewater treatment, solid and air pollution management, environmental technologies, health & safety, and water policy.

  • Open‑Access Model

    • JTL operates on an immediate open-access policy, providing unrestricted research availability to support global knowledge exchange.

Indexing & Accreditation

  • Indexing Databases

    • The journal is listed in prominent indexing systems including Garuda, Google Scholar, and SINTA.

  • SINTA Accreditation

    • The current accreditation level is Sinta 5, indicating recognition at the national level.

  • Citation Metrics

    • With 2,361 Google Scholar citations and a moderate h-index (~25), it enjoys respectable academic merit.

Transition to a New Platform

  • Modern Publishing Platform

    • JTL now operates on a modern OJS-based site at envengjournal.com, offering improved submission and archival access.

    • Archives dating back to 2021 are accessible—Volume 27 No. 1 (June 2021) is an example.

 

Future Plans & Strategic Goals

As the Journal of Environmental Engineering ITB (formerly Jurnal Teknik Lingkungan) continues to evolve, the editorial team remains committed to advancing its academic standing, expanding international reach, and ensuring high-quality research dissemination.

 

English-Language Transition

To support internationalization and improve global visibility:

  • All manuscripts are now published in English, starting from the latest issues.

  • The journal has officially adopted the English name:
    Journal of Environmental Engineering ITB.

This strategic shift reflects the journal’s readiness to engage with a broader international academic audience and meet the standards of leading global indexing bodies.

Indexing Goals

  • SINTA 1 Accreditation (Indonesia's Highest Tier)
    The journal is actively working toward achieving SINTA 1, by:

    • Improving article quality and citation metrics

    • Enhancing editorial policies and transparency

    • Increasing publication consistency

    • Expanding reviewer diversity and peer-review quality

  • Scopus Indexing
    To be included in Scopus, the journal is taking steps such as:

    • Maintaining rigorous peer-review and editorial processes

    • Publishing content with international relevance

    • Improving metadata quality and citation tracking

    • Building international author and editorial collaborations

Internationalization Strategy

  • Publishing exclusively in English

  • Increasing contributions from international authors and reviewers

  • Adding global scholars to the editorial board

  • Enhancing website usability for global users

  • Promoting the journal through international academic networks and events
